THEME 3:
Energy Graduate School (EGS)
There is a need to develop the knowledge and skills base in Wales in relation to low carbon technologies. There is a need to develop and provide transfer mechanisms for researchers from other related fields.
A number of the LCRI partner Universities already have masters programmes within the energy field, for example, Sustainable Energy and Environment (Cardiff University), Environmental Design of Buildings (Cardiff Univeresity), Renewable Energy and Resource Management (Glamorgan University) and Power Electronics (Swansea University). There are also networks in place in relation to training, for example, Construction Knowledge Wales and Wales Energy Sector Training (WEST). These will form the basis of the EGS.
The delivery and accreditation of taught modules across universities will need to be considered so that courses can recognise modules from partner universities. The EGS will build on the existing programmes in the University sector and fill the gaps to provide a comprehensive approach to energy education and training in Wales, and will attract international students to contribute to the international standing of LCRI.
This theme will:
- Establish an Energy Graduate School to provide Masters, CPD and PhD courses. These courses will link with existing programmes within partner institutions and the LCRI will also generate new collaborative Masters, CPS and PhD programmes. The LCRI will also foster a PhD community through PhD activities such as conferences.
- Provide a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to energy training.
- Work with industry on their education and training needs in the energy field and where appropriate involve industry in the delivery of programmes.
