LCRI Policy Forum on…
“The role of Hydrogen in fuelling our Low Carbon Future”

The first LCRI Policy Forum took place at the Parc Thistle Hotel, Cardiff on the evening of the 26 May 2010 (5.00 pm – 8.30 pm).

Focussing on “The role of Hydrogen in fuelling our Low Carbon Future” the event brought together many of the UK’s leading scientific experts on the sustainable production of Hydrogen with key industrial stakeholders and public policy makers in order to discuss the role of this energy source in fuelling a low carbon future, and the opportunities for Wales and the UK to lead that transition.

In March 2010 South Wales was awarded Low Carbon Economic Area status to lead the UK’s development of Hydrogen and alternative transport fuels.

Glamorgan University is leading the LCRI’s £6.3M H2 Wales research project supported under the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) convergence energy program. Glamorgan University is also a member of the Research Council’s UK Sustainable Hydrogen Energy Consortium (UKSHEC).

Cardiff University is playing a leading role in the Research Council’s £5.1 M Delivery of Sustainable Hydrogen (H-Delivery) Consortium.

The Low Carbon Research Institute (LCRI) has secured £34M, over the next six years, from the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO).

Part of the European Research Development Fund (ERDF’s) Convergence and Regional Competitiveness and Employment programmes, the cash injection will enable Wales and Welsh Universities through the LCRI and its industry partners to lead the way in the development of new research to cut carbon emissions.

The funding will provide a strategic, coordinated approach for interdisciplinary industrial energy research in Wales and provide a research base for the energy sector industries to help them deliver government targets for reducing carbon dioxide emissions and enable these industries to compete on an international stage.

Announcing the funding at Cardiff University in October 2009, the then First Minister for Wales Rhodri Morgan said: “Wales has a vital role to play in tackling global environmental changes.

“This programme will place Wales at the forefront of industry led research to achieve more affordable low carbon energy, improve energy efficiency from a range of sources and reduce energy demand across all sectors.”
