WEST Course: An Introduction to Combustion Science
Post date: May 9, 2014
LCRI’s WEST project has launched An Introduction to Combustion Science, the first of their Large Scale Power Generation courses, which went live on 2nd May. This online course, designed by the Large Scale Power Generation team from Cardiff University’s School of Engineering, is aimed at individuals working or interested in working in the field of combustion.
An Introduction to Combustion Science is a 1 credit CPD module, accredited to level 4 of the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales. The course is fully funded for people living or working within Welsh Convergence areas.
The course introduces the fundamental principles of combustion science which govern combustion efficiency and emissions. Among the topics covered, participants on this course will learn how to balance combustion equations for efficient and safe combustion using a wide range of conventional and alternative fuels. Participants will also learn how the stoichiometry (i.e. air to fuel ratio) of a flame can be ascertained through observation and measurement.
Sally Hewlett, the course designer said “This course is developed with convenience built in. The written materials, practise quizzes, assessments and video workshops are delivered in ‘bite-size’ sessions for easy integration into a busy schedule. The course is also fully mobile having been designed to run on a range of platforms including PC, iPad and smartphones.”
